There are still some parts of the world where a lack 'equality' is not the only problem faced by girls after their birth.....that is if they are born at all.

Read about it here, in an article that is more than a little thought provoking and covers a documentary film due to be released later this year:

It's a girl: The three deadliest words in the world

Yes I had the same reaction as you LBP, just reading about it.

And that after already having know that it does happen to a certain extent, which is bad enough in this day and age, but so much and in so many places, and then to see details, the background and just how 'inhumane' it even makes the mothers of these children. Although of course they obviously believe they have no other choice.

It is a way of life that is just too sad.

Not sure I will be able to watch the documentary either, although it is apparently scheduled to be shown here.

Thank you for your feedback LBP.

This is so sad and horrific, Francine. I have read about this happening many times before and just cannot understand the atrocities of it all.

A few years ago, here in our own city, a woman was caught drowning her baby girl in the river. In an open and very public 'river walk' area she just boldly put the baby in the water and held her under then let her float away. Several people called the police and she was arrested. No one could reach the woman to stop her, for she was on the opposite side of the river where there was no public walk. She had parked her car illegally above on the bridge (which received more calls to the police), and managed to get down the rugged, undeveloped bank to the river. She told the police that she was only bathing her baby when she lost hold of "it", which is what she called the baby girl.

It was such a shocking thing to happen in our own city.

Phyllis that is just awful. Somehow, when it happens in a culture where girls are basically just not wanted, although it is not easier to understand, as horrifying as it is one just knows that to a certain extent it happens. And has happened for centuries.

When it takes place in our own society then it takes on a whole extra meaning.

Did anyone ever find out why the woman did this? Did she just not want a daughter or was there another reason?

It happens here also of course, even though in many European countries there are special places in towns, especially hospitals and churches, where unwanted children, babies mostly, can be secretly placed.

The act of placing them in the little 'Baby Box' sounds some type of alarm and the child is collected virtually at once, just having given the person leaving it time to 'escape'. For desperate people, the majority are mothers, this is at least a way out.
