I was castigated like crazy when I recently suggested on an atheist blog that nontheist organizations should reconsider some of their goals and tactics.
I truly understand the importance of the separation of church and state. But protesting public nativity scenes every year? Yet another protest over the use of the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance?
The Catholic Church made America feel its power and reach in the recent birth control debacle. Perhaps atheist organizations could have provided a rational and compassionate counterview. It would've been great to see atheist organizations give a damn about this issue, about women and families and reproductive rights.
But, no. While some atheist organizations did mention the issue on their blogs, I have yet to see them approach these issues with the vigor they apply in fighting public displays of religion.
I guess if a poor and pregnant Catholic woman had planted a Virgin Mary statue in front of a public school, then the woman would've gotten some attention from atheist organizations.
Sorry if this post seems a bit "all over the place." A little ranting before I'm off to work.
