While doing some basement cleaning last night I came across a box of 78 records. Many of them are classical music.

What do you think, is the whole box worth $5? Does anybody play 78s any more? Maybe some of these are rare gems that don't exist anywhere any more - but I don't think we even have a record player in the house, never mind one that can play 78s smile

I've seen a few YouTube videos of people playing old records on YouTube to share the music with the world, and that strikes me as a really cool thing. But it also seems like copyright infringement. How is that any different than posting a MP3 for the world to copy?

Depends on when the 78s were made. Copyright might have expired on the performance. (Though with the change in those laws, I am not sure)

I would look around and look for prices on the 78s. 30 years ago maybe $5 for a box, who knows where the market is today.

And peruse your records for artists. Bing Crosby singing "Moonlight Becomes You" is worth more than an unknown artist singing a non-hit song. Yes, I have that one. I also picked up at a flea market for next to nothing a boxed set of recordings by John Philip Sousa and his band (after the army).

I have found that collectors will often offer much more than $5 - if you have a particular recod they want. Have you tried checking it out on the internet?

hi lisa,
i still buy vynils now and again and there s still a market for it.a lot of collectors would probably be interested depending of their state.what they are most interested in is the pressing of the vynil, like if it has been pressed at a limited number of copies or if it is a first press one.
have you got only classical?
some sites will tell you how much they are worth,or check ebay to see at how much they go for?
otherwise you can always try second hand shops, some will take them for you.

I have about 100 albums. Some are Elvis, folk, CW,Frank Sinatra, Disney children songs, Glenn Yarborough, Christy Minstrels, Hoyt Axton, Willie Nelson, Willie & Waylon, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Bluegrass, Hank Williams Sr., Kenny Rogers, and a lot of others.

I would like to get them on CD's then sell the albums. I will check into the values of them.

Hmmm. It might be worth contacting Pristine Classical to see if they would be interested in buying any of them from you or could give you some idea of what they would be worth. They specialise in taking old LP's and 78s and recording them onto computer - even if broken - and then selling the out of copyright recordings from their web site. Several members of my family have purchased CD's from them to the point that it has caused confusion as to where to send the item ordered on occasion!!

The web site is Pristine Classical.

I was at a little store a couple of weeks ago that buy and sell records. Some were going for as high as $50 per album! I am sure it depends on the rarity and the demand but still. good advice from the posters, check around, you probably can get more than $5 for the whole box.

Thank you everyone for your help! I ended up listing them all on ebay. I sold about half of them for prices ranging between 99 cents and $20 I think was the upper limit. So some did go for more.

Now I have about half of them left that nobody on ebay wanted. I tried listing them on Craigslist but I didn't get a single response.

Here's what I have left -

Lisa's 78 Records

So what do you think, are these the hopeless ones?

We did buy a record player with a USB cable and easily recorded these all onto MP3s before selling them. So turning your records into MP3 files is quite easy.
