Few people realize that exotic animals can help people with disabilities lead a happier and richer life; allowing them independence they would not have had without these service exotic animals. Miniature horses, monkeys to ferrets, allow the dignity these folks ought to have. This will be a two part series animals that serve and animals that save! For the New Years I felt it was time to say thank you to these incredible animals that serve and save!

Wow Diana, I never thought along these lines. I know they use animals in places like hospitals and nursing homes. But not exotic ones. Thanks for the additional knowledge - learn't something new today.

Animals are much more intelligent than people ever gave them credit for. Wait until next week's article on animals that save. It will bring tears to your eyes at how amazing these animals are.

Diana, this is a wonderful article. I liked it on FB and left a comment.

I would love to have a miniature horse. They are so darling and I know they are intelligent. However, I do not have a yard for one. I am not too comfortable with large dogs and a tiny horse would be such a great companion to walk with. I checked out the site about Guide Horses and the pics of the little guys are so precious.

Thanks for this information.

I have heard of monkeys as helpers but never the miniature horses. That is really fascinating. They really can be trained to guide a person that is blind like a guide dog?

It is really amazing isn't it. Here is a handy link to find what we are all discussing Animals That Serve

The a harness rigging is very similar to what is used with guide dogs. Guide miniature horses have a lot of qualities that make them perfect for the job. Horses have incredible memories. You wouldn't believe all the phenomenal qualities that make the horse perfect guide animals. Read the articles and check out the link to the The Guide Horse Foundation which can be found at the bottom of my article.

You may find this interesting and may know of someone that may be interested...

We are always seeking legally-blind volunteers to participate in our experiment and you can find a Guide Horse Candidate Application here, or just call for details.

I think they are adorable and would love to raise them someday. I could donate the foals to the Guide Horse Foundation. That would be ultra cool!

I never realized there were service or guide animals other than dogs. I can well imagine that these animals would be a valuable resource for people with disabilities. Once again, it proves than humans and animals are meant to co-exist.
