Cleaning up the look and feel of your site so your content stands out is key for scoring high in google searches this year. I've been making gradual changes to my site/blog for the past week and was excited to see the difference (compared before and after using Wayback machine).
Giving your site a fresh look is just as important as giving yourself a new look every now and then because keeping things looking current means people are more likely to view more pages vs. just click away.
Also if you're site is covered in ads from top to bottom and side to side, now is the time to reduce ad blocks. Less is better according to google. I personally didn't need to delete many blocks but did it anyway and the result has been pretty awesome in terms of click thru of remaining ad blocks.
