A very warm welcome to the Self Development Forum !

Silence has great power as the self development article below shows. If you are aware of how to use silence effectively, this can significantly improve your work and social relationships. It is a very powerful tool.

See: Power of Silence and How To Use It

* Do you use silence to get what you want? In what way?
* What do you love or hate about silence?

I'd love to receive your feedback so do add your comments, queries, thoughts, etc., to this Forum thread. I look forward to hearing from you!

Joy what a great article. The first thing to come ot mind for me when I saw the title was the song The Sound of Silence.

I love the way you've looked at so many aspects and active uses of silence - from sales and negotiation to religion. You also touch on silence in films, and it ocurred to me that in the early days all films were silent...

Hi Asha, many thanks for your feedback. You're right - I'd forgotten that all films were silent originally. How the world has changed! (JOY)

Indeed how the world has changed Joy...

I wonder if people talked less in the past, before TV, radio, computers etc... It seems now that people often want to fill space, want to answer phones even when engaged in other activities, are happy to talk on mobiles in public places disturbing the (possible) peace of those around them... Research suggests that women talk a lot more than men - I wonder if this was the case thousands of years ago, or whether women talk more because the conventions of appreciating the benefits of silent communication have been lost.

I use silence to gather all the info I could ever want or need. In my experience - people will tell you so much more than they ever realize if you just remain silent and use body language to communicate interest. The result is amazing.

Hi Lori, yes, being silent certainly allows you to be much more aware of non-verbal communication. (JOY)

Such a great article. As per my, Silence has an energy to it like no other source. It has the power to get people to think and to act, it can help slow the mind down, and it is a powerful ally in the likes of counseling and life coaching.

Asha -

On the topic of women talking more than men, current research shows that women talk exactly as much as men do. They just talk in different environments. In a work environment men can talk much more than women do. They often make the women be subordinate. In social situations the women can talk more. Over their week though it is fairly even and depends on who they are with.
