I just saw on the news today...something quite interesting. On Halloween day (which is today for me) the 7 billionth person to be on the planet is going to be born. And right after that, I saw a piece about how people are using water faster than it can be collected, processed and sent out. Maybe if people on this planet would stop having kids, there wouldn't be a problem with the water supply. 7 billion people? Come on, what right does any one have to complain about it when they are causing the problem to begin with? Maybe all the people who want kids with such desperation and ridicule those who don't should step back and look at the situation we have in the world today. Sorry for simply venting like that, cause I know there are a few parents on here. I just had heard that and decided to share.

I saw the same news story, and thought "what's wrong with this picture"? DUH!
And many couples still have four to five kids...hmmmm.
Moral of the story > more kids = more water, more food, more garbage, more environmental damage. We can see it...why can't the rest of the world ?
Birth control = problem solved.
Just sayin'. smile

I know! Dont even get me started. I think Prophets of Doom documentary should be played everyday. It clearly states the world was never meant to hold this many people. I don't know about you but I find peace in knowing that I will not have grandchildren struggling to survive on a dying, polluted planet.

I strongly believe that lack of self-control and misled values are the main contributors to what we are seeing right now. In America I tend to think that it's primarily self-control: People running around saying "Oops, I forgot my pill" or "I got carried away and forgot to use protection". Maybe I don't understand -- over the years, I have cared so much about AVOIDING pregnancy that I have never had a slip-up on contraceptive use, period.

Then the other side of this is related to nations that encourage over-sized families and punish women for using contraceptives. I just read an article on CNN today about how women in undeveloped countries have too many babies too close and die as a result. It went on to say that these women are starting to use Depo-Provera as a birth control method because their husbands/partners won't know about it. This is disturbing - women that have so little freedom and respect that they can't agree with a man to use birth control - possibly due to fear that they will be abused.

This being said, I do not fault anyone for choosing to have a large family at will. I think the problem lies with lives that are created out of pure irresponsibility. People should take their reproductive lives seriously and stop playing chicken with it.

What I hate is how some people condemn women for being careful. Like some Christians for instance, they think it's wrong to use birth control or condoms. So then if two teenagers who probably shouldn't even have sex in the first place do it, the girl will get pregnant. Or if a woman gets raped by a man, she'll end up pregnant with that child because we can't give anyone access to birth control or condoms. No joke, I just read an article the other day that said birth control should be withheld from society, so that more women can "do what's right", and have babies and not refuse such a wonderful gift if God wants to give it. I don't know about you, but no rape victim in this world that I know of would view getting pregnant as a gift from God. It would be nothing but a constant reminder of all the agony and suffering she went through.

I am a Christian and have nothing against birth control. There's nothing more tragic than bringing an unwanted child into the world, and it bothers me that people don't give this the level of seriousness it deserves. While God has established a purpose for people to "be fruitful and multiply", there is also a purpose and place for those not compelled to pro-create, just as the apostle Paul had a purpose for being single and thus giving his life to ministry. To condemn a woman for not being compelled to have children is just as wrong as telling a single person they are wrong for not being compelled to marry.

Kudos to women out there who, despite the overwhelming peer and societal pressure, choose to remain without children because it is THEIR choice.

Amen, Amen, and Amen beth !!
Bravo !!
I'm a Christian also and I couldn't agree more..
I think it is more responsible to take the stand and know that you don't have the disposition.
Bring an unwanted child into the world ?

I agree with both Beth and Burt, and I am also a Christian. The person I had been referring to was an advocate for a certain Catholic Church that has an online webpage to promote having children to women once they're married. It just frustrates me because the few that are like that give all Christians a bad rap as bossy know-it-alls.
