The Great Worldwide Star Count has begun: October 14-28. You can help map light pollution around the world. Unnecessary lighting takes away our view of the sky, can be harmful to wildlife and to human health - and it's just plain wasteful.

It's easy and you can download an activity guide in German (or 14 other languages!). BTW the guide is for last year, but the activity hasn't changed.

Star Count Activity Guide 2010 - in German

I was lucky to get a nice patch of clear sky on my way home from visiting a friend. And it was mild enough to stand around long enough for my eyes to adjust. Amazingly, I saw eta CYG which is nearly fourth magnitude, but I can tell you it was just barely. I recorded the sky as 3rd magnitude, but noted this.

I'll be in mid Wales next week, so hope to get another observation there, though I'm not counting on it.
