I am going to have my "new" used washing machine installed on tuesday - very excited to have an easy way to wash my sheets and linens! I was okay with doing some of my clothes by hand, but the big and really dirty stuff, like towels and blankets, have just been piling up.

So I have been researching making my own laundry detergent and apparently i have all the ingredients right here already! You only need three things - Fels naptha (or any bar soap), borax, and washing soda.

According to my research, you can have your own clean and green liquid or powder detergent that comes to only .03 cents a load.

I'd say that's pretty darn frugal. :-)

I'll be experimenting with a few recipes i found and reporting on it here.

Anyone make and use their own laundry detergent?

It will be some time before i make my own, since I am still using up what detergent i already have.

What is your favorite laundry cleanser?

I used to make my own a long time ago - probably with a similar recipe. I no longer have the storage space for the big bucket of goo. :-) I've also found that the commercial detergents really do work better in getting the clothes cleaner.

There is a recipe kicking around for homemade stain remover which did work fairly well. It had vinegar and detergent in it, if I remember correctly.

I have not made homemade detergent yet - still using up my commercial stuff.

I do have a yucky mayonnaise stain on some sweats though - i might mess around with baking soda, vinegar and dish soap to try to get that up.

I make my own laundry detergent. It's pretty quick, very easy and surprisingly fun to make. I also add a few drops of lemon grass oil or whatever catches my fancy when I'm making my soap. It saves a ton of money and it does a great job cleaning our clothes. It takes about twenty to thirty minutes to make, leave it for a day. The only real work is when it comes time to put it into containers. I use milk jugs.

Cannot wait to see your homemade laundry detergent. I'm making an effort to go as green as I can this year.

Rlmathewson, that is great! And I like the milk jug idea - i have a lot of those kicking around, ready to use.

I also save my previous laundry detergent containers, since they are already perfect for the job. smile

Hi Jilly! Sorry I was away for a bit and just saw this post. Thanks for spurring me to set some clear objectives for living greener:

Reduce, recycle, and reuse--right?

1. Reduce meat consumption. My goal is to limit red meat consumption to occasional use. Once a week or less. I will serve chicken and fish once a week. The remainder of our meals will be vegetarian. Good news is that everyone else in the family is on board with this goal! smile

2. Getting the family to stop being lazy in recycling. I hate when I find recyclables in the trash bin.

3. Getting the family to use less electricity by turning off their power strips instead of letting the computers slip into sleep mode overnight.

4. Use less, eat less. Sometimes, I cook too much and end up wasting. And while I typically don't use a lot of prepared foods, I will try to buy more from the bulk item bins to reduce the amount of packaging. And I'll move toward buying organic produce at the local farmer's market even though the items tend to be more expensive.

5. Growing an edible garden, starting this spring.

6. Start a vermi-composting bin.

7. More hand-washing dishes (got spoiled by the dishwasher!) and hanging laundry outside instead of using dryer.

8. Bring my reusable grocery bags when I shop. I always forget.

Those are a good start!
