"the new moon (any astrological person will confirm this) is the new crescent on the moon's cycle, it is not a mass plot to not do as the quran says, many times we do the exact opposite of what we should but this is not one of them! I guess you are just a little mistaken on what constitutes a New moon"
This is what a friend of mine posted in response to one of my posts on facebook.
I said that a new Moon is when it is invisible to the naked eye and comes around every 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes.
Can someone help me? What is a new Moon?

Does the crescent Moon represent a new Moon? Or is it a new Moon when it is invisible to the naked eye?

Hi Linda,
The new moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and sun. This is when these three planets are in approximate alignment. The entire illuminated portion of the moon is on the back side of the moon, the half that we cannot see. The new moon occurs between the waxing crescent of the first quarter moon and the waning crescent of the third quarter moon.
I will try to draw the moon phases for you if you like, but I think Donna can do a better job of explaining this to you when she comes along.

Hi Linda,
There is a 'clickable' coloured illustration at the top of the the German Culture Site's 'Lunar Gardening' article, with the various stages of the moon.
The larger picture might help you to see more clearly how a 'New Moon' appears to us.

Hi Phyllis and Francine,
Thank you both so much, I just really wanted clarification and verification before I wrote an article.
I get so much grief from other Muslims because I start fasting on the morning after the new Moon, the Moon you have both described, but the so called Islamic calender seems to be going by the waxing crescent. Islamic months begin at night.
Even though this year people seemed to start fasting a day after the new Moon or a day before the crescent Moon! For some reason last year we all started on the same day, the morning after the dark new Moon! Total confusion it seems.
This is what a friend of mine (male!) said to me:
sorry guys, actually the first day of ramadan is actually the DAY AFTER the new moon (sometimes more than one day) but never the day of the new moon
and if that didn't make sense he then wrote:
the new moon (any astrological person will confirm this) is the new crescent on the moon's cycle, it is not a mass plot to not do as the quran says, many times we do the exact opposite of what we should but this is not one of them! I guess you are just a little mistaken on what constitutes a New moon. i hope this clears things for ya. x
Well no it didn't!
I am just a little mistaken?! I just had to be sure and I knew that you lovely ladies would come to my rescue.
Phyllis I would love for you to draw me the Moon phases and with your permission I would love to use them in my article.
Very clever article Francine and I found it in archives, second click!
Thanks so much x

Astronomically speaking, the new moon is the phase in which the Moon isn't visible from Earth. It's between the Earth and the Sun and its light is reflected back to the Sun. BTW since it's so close the Sun, you wouldn't see it at night anyhow. The new moon is also sometimes called the dark of the moon.
The crescent moon is called the crescent moon.
Francine's diagram is very good. Phyllis has put in a link to it.
Hope this helps.

Linda, I just looked up and found some great pictures at Phases of the Moon on wikipedia that you can use. They are much better than what I could draw. The pic at the top of the article is awesome!
