You are right about Athena. she is a marvelous girl. Amazingly bright, intuitive, and a wonderful sense of humour. ( better then a lot of people I knew :P) How I miss her :( But she is now forever part of my arm. I had a tattoo of her put on my right arm :)

It is truly remarkable what animals understand. Animals are probably shaking their heads wondering why we don't understand them.

When we lived in the country in California it was near enough to the city for people to stuff their unwanted pets in a bag and dump them on the country roads. I don't know, proper punishment shot on sight? I did cry when we found the pups. Thank goodness one did live and turned out to be the smartest, sweetest Golden Retriever I had ever met. it was a privileged to have lived with that dog.

We had named him Jake. My son who had pretty serious disabilities loved that dog dearly. I owe that dog a great deal of gratitude. Until my son died, he was his best friend. The kids were mean to him at school. But, he had Jake to talk to, and Jake never judged!

I'll never forget her laugh!! I'd make a foolish mistake, and she'd laugh in such a way to make me blush. Turn around and walk into a wall, Athena was sure to come up with one of her belly laughs!

There is a New Yorker magazine cartoon (you can find it on the New Yorker web site in the Cartoon Bank by typing in "animals" and "pig") that speaks to human self-centeredness. In the cartoon is a man in a Hawaiian shirt with barbecue tongs in one hand and a can in the other. The man is standing on a cloud looking up at a tall desk and behind the desk are large white (pearly, I suppose) gates. So far, the anthropomorphic scene generally appears as the entry to heaven. But, behind the desk, instead of some countenance of St. Peter, is a big pig in a white robe and sporting a halo. The caption simply reads: "Go ahead, finish your beer." Best wishes, Z. G.
