The Mermaid Parade

In Coney Island New York, The Mermaid Parade celebrates the beginning of summer. It usually takes place on the third Saturday in June -- so this year, it'll be on Saturday, June 18, 2011. An integral part of Coney Island life, the parade has thousands of participants, and hundreds of thousands come out to snap pictures and watch.

The parade has a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere and like the most raucous Fat Tuesday events in New Orleans, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade showcases racy costumes, shhh...partial nudity, and one hot party atmosphere! Artistic self expression is highly encouraged and Parade observers will see mermaids, mermen, and a host of other sea creatures. Local celebrities take the coveted roles of King Neptune and Queen Mermaid.

Afterward, there's a Mermaid Parade Ball where people mingle, enjoy live music, and watch sideshows and burlesque acts. Parade organizers say it's a family friendly event, but my advice? Like the Village Halloween Parade, this fun event is really only for adults wink

That sounds like a crazy fun parade. I wonder how many cities have their own crazy parades like this. It's definitely a great way for people let loose or gives the more serious people something fun to gossip about.

To each his/her own. After reading about this in wiki (I know not the same as experience or eye witness account) I find it kind of disturbing that they call it a family event and yet there is partial nudity going on. As an adult party indoors, go for it. As a family event with people sexualizing childhood Disney characters, creepy. Just my opinion.

Hi Monica,

It is a lot of fun; and about your question re: other states, I wonder too...
