It is easy to make, hard to mess up and delicious, and legend has it that it was seamen who were the first to 'invent' the centuries old Rumtopf tradition.

The conserving of soft seasonal fruit in sugar and rum during the summer and early autumn months, which long ago led to the fruit and rum pot becoming an indispensible, and enjoyable, part of Christmastime celebrations, and a warming treat during Germanys winter months.

Francine, this Rumtopf sounds wonderful! I will have to look for the perfect pot/container to give this a try. I can so imagine serving this with vanilla ice cream or as a side dish to pork loin roast.

Oh Phyllis you will so enjoy it, and your choice is just right. With ice cream it is just so moreish it is hard to stop, while it fits with pork perfectly.

Rumtopf is stronger than it looks though.which I found out to my cost when trying out the results of my very first effort at making it. Had dinner guests where that was the dessert with ice cream, and we unsealed the pot and all ended up having second, third and more helpings without thinking just what that was going to our heads in the morning.

Was very young at the time, cant think of another excuse.

Thanks so much for your feedback, I appreciate it..and my goodness were you up very early in reading that post this morning, or just still up and about very late. It says 4.58 a.m., wow, perhaps you had been sitting on that front porch of yours.

By the way a comment you made on another post about potatoes..grew potatoes in largish cute containers years ago when I had an apartment with a balcony. Planted three and that meant literally pounds of potatoes later in the year, and they were delicious with lots of unhealthy butter and chopped mint, which was also there growing like crazy in its own box alongside all the other herbs.

Worth a try if you feel like growing your own kartoffeln, sometime.

Thanks once again.

Wow, Francine...I never thought about growing potatoes in a large pot. I will have to try that. It is too late this year I think, cut next year I will do that. Thanks!

Yes, I was up early this morning. I so enjoy my days much more when I get up before Grandfather Sun rises. It is such a quiet and peaceful time.

Super idea........a rumtopf gathering! laugh Will go and pick some cherries from the garden today, the strawberries are already there waiting it was an early harvest this year, and then we can look forward to some winter evenings putting the world to rights in the root cellar.

Now a root cellar is something I have never even heard about before, let alone seen, so that will be quite an exciting experience.

LOL Francine, when I saw the word "pot" in your post's title I thought it was the illegal pot smile

Sounds delicious, thanks for sharing with us!

Did anyone start a Rumtopf, and if so how is it going, are we any nearer to that Rumptopf root cellar gathering? smile

It's not too late to start, masses of summer fruit on the way before the season is over. Have just picked the greengages ready to go in, and my goodness the aroma from the pot is already delicious.

Peaches next...........if they don't all get eaten before reaching the pot, there should have been rather more greengages than actually ended up being 'Rumtopfed'. No that isn't a word, but it is appropriate.
