Many players have heard rumors or even played with vicious DMs, but is that really how the hobby is meant to be played?

Dungeon Masters Vicious or Friendly?

My very 1st GM showed this to us, let us read it, went to the kitchen to get snacks. Then he said 'PSYCH! just kidding!'
Yes there are some rules DICtaters but for the most part, the ones I've met are fun and very crafty! The only mean one I had, well I got him back by playing a Kender--and he just couldn't kill my char!! lol

I've been very fortunate - I've always played with supportive, encouraging game masters.

I've always considered myself lucky, too. I've played with only 3 DMs regularly in my long RP career. The first was my boyfriend, so he was hard on me, but not unfair. The second was brilliant, and loved telling stories, so he was all about getting the story across, and could hardly have cared less about stat sheets so long as we were all having fun (in fact, we often sort of made it up as we went along!) The last is now my husband, and he is another DM who thinks in whole worlds and epic story arcs. I have, however, heard stories about other DMs here in town, and seen them play on public play days like International D&D Day, and I'm really glad I didn't get referred to their tables!

That's a scary poster! Though your DM had a great sense of humour grin

I've never had a DM, but I wouldn't put up with an abusive one. Life is too full of abuse to do it for fun! Not my thing.

I've played with a number of DMs over the years and they were all very wonderful people. I just don't get why someone would spend their free time playing a game where they were being tortured. Life is too short to spend your free time - which is already quite scarce - having someone hurt you.
