Hedgehogs are illegal to possess in six states (Hawaii, California, Arizona, Georgia, Maine, and Pennsylvania), and in a number of localities, including New York City. By far the mosty notorious place is Pennsylvania due to overzealous enforcement of all things animal by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. A few days ago, a fifth grade class in Allentown, PA embarked on a class project to decide on a class pet. After considerable research and deliberations, they decided on a hedgehog. Then, to their dismay, they discovered that hedgehogs were illegal to possess in Pennsylvania. Well, they set out to have the law changed. Their plight is being followed by editorial writer Bill White of The Morning Call, Allentown's newspaper. You can read all about it at www.Mcall.com at "Opinion" and then click on "White" to the left of the bar. While there, be sure to read Mr. White's blog titled "Nutkin the Squirrel" so as to get a good view of how the Pennsylvania Game Commission operates. Best wishes, Z. G.
