German wedding receptions last long into the night with the bride and groom often staying until the last guest leaves, while in some areas the bride is kidnapped during the evening, taken to a local restaurant or bar and her new husband must first find and then rescue her by paying a 'ransom'..... the outstanding bill.

But before this can take place first there is the wedding which has its own customs and traditions, and those are the subject of this weeks German Culture article.

Great article! It cleared a few things up for me. My daughter's wedding was this past November and we had several of the groom's family fly in from Germany. Thankfully my cousin was able to interpret a little for us.

During the rehearsal dinner we were comparing wedding traditions. With our language limitations, I was left with more questions than answers. Your article cleared up a few, thanks.

I can better understand their confusion, being driven to a farm in the countryside for an evening wedding. They certainly had some interesting stories to share upon their return.

Hi Jane, Thanks for your feedback, am happy you enjoyed the article and that it answered a few questions for you.

Yes the traditions in Germany are quite a bit different, but it is great isn't it how, even now with the media sending images worldwide, most countries are still keeping to many of their old customs one way or another.

Your daughter's wedding sounds really lovely and would have been a super occasion for anyone from Germany to take part in, quite unlike anything they had seen before probably, so you are right they will have had a lot to talk about when they got home.

By the way when my eldest son was very small indeed we spent some time visiting and learning about the Navajo and Hopi people, that was also a fascinating, and life changing, experience. For me at least, he unfortunately was too young to really remember it.
