My MIL is definitely one of those pushy, no-filter types. I have a baby shower coming up the first week in May for her daughter (my SIL) and I am dreading going for the simple fact that I know the topic will come up. Nevermind that her daughter is having her first baby! It'll be about the challenge of changing my mind. I will be the only one there who is not a parent or pregnant. I told my husband if she corners me and harasses me I'm getting in my car and leaving. You're right about the cutting off ties/ hanging up the phone/ leaving the house. It's the only way to not get an earful. Have I mentioned I despise baby showers?! Haha

It's very manipulative and I would only do this as a LAST resort but you could feign a pregnancy and then feign a miscarriage. Then you can say that you cannot carry a child. I know many will hate this idea and I really do to but if there are people who cannot be satisfied with the truth, what they really want is a lie. At least you can be sure not many in the family will bring up having a kid in the future.

Catluvgal, is spite of the dark tone of your post, I couldn't help but giggle. I think doing this would be bad karma, and could diminish the plight of those who really want kids but can't have them...BUT, If MIL has the nerve to try and be pushy and manipulative well I guess she deserves a taste of her own meds! if SillyYak wants to go this route I would recommend maybe skipping over the feigned pregnancy and going straight for the "unable to have kids" thing. When you think about it it isn't a lie! SillyYak IS unable to have a child, unable to have a child without being miserable!

Well, it's another late night. This time because we are getting pounded with storms, and a tornado or two. My husband, 2 70 pound dogs, and 5 cats and I have been hiding out in the bathroom. Fun times! I am laughing reading all these posts because we have seriously thought about saying we can't have kids. As it turns out, I was diagnosed with celiac disease and might not be able to anyway. That would be convenient! Maybe my desires to be a mother are non-existent because my body knows better. Always interesting to think about. Sometimes I feel like I'm being too hard on the MIL. I know she thinks her kids are the greatest (what parent doesn't?) so she wants them to make lots of babies. Problem is she should accept that she raised intelligent, productive members of society who are capable of thinking for themselves. I guess the extreme catholic in her cannot accept marriage without kids. My argument for that is that's between God and me. (did I mention I'm not a religious person? And I am a vegan celiac?) I am just striking out with her. Thanks for the encouragement! Glad I don't have any babies to try to cram in this bathroom, we are out of space as it is!

One thing I don't like about MIL is they still support their children no matter how wrong they were. tsk, tsk, tsk
