My mother is 89 years old and still remembers her best friend from grade school. She often wonders where and how her friend is.

My best friend was Betty. Her and I stuck together and protected each other from Ruthie, the school Bully. Betty and I both were very shy, but when together we were brave.

Yes, and she was the best person I have ever met. She didn't lie, if she said she would do something, you could count on her to do it. She is such a wonderful, honest, open, caring individual, that I have a hard time making friends, because they do not come up to her standards. I grew up expecting that from friendships, because that's just the way we were with each other. I knew no different. No one can compete with that. So now, I do not have many close friends, because if they do something hurtful or deceitful, I'm gone. She is many states away now, and we rarely see each other. But when we do, it is as if there has been no time elapsed.

Yes I do. But for some reason we lost touch right after graduation. I sent her a wedding invitation when I got married, but she was unable to come. I finally met up with her 2 years ago when I finally attended a highschool reunion - the 30th.

That must be so nice to still be close to your best friend from grade school.

I kept in occasional contact with my best friend from grade school for many years, but after a number of years I stopped hearing from her. My best friend from high school, however, has continued to be in my life even now 55 years later. We live about 800 miles apart but have managed to get together every now and then, and keep in fairly close email contact.
The old friends are the best!
