An underutilized way of cutting expenses and building greater support and community is to share housing. more and more women, from single mom's to seniors are finding life doesn't have to be such a lonely and expense road if you share it. check out the facebook page for shared housing help and start 2011 with new concepts of sharing and caring for yourself in a new way! I agree that shared housing is a brilliant way to live more cheaply and save on many resources, while building community.

Has anyone thought about creating a situation with housing your extended family, and not just the nuclear unit? Has anyone been thinking about buying property with friends and putting multiple buildings on it?

I do like the idea of family compounds. I have been thinking about creating something like that. We'd have to get a nice sized plot of land - a few acres - in the country. It would be best if it was a few miles from a town - something walkable.

Doreen and Jilly

I wrote something that I think ties in loosely with what you are both thinking. Do You Want To Live Alone?. I would be intersted in your thoughts on this.

I also just heard today that one of the UK government's ideas for cutting costs is to give housing benefit at a shared/single room rate for people up to the age of 35 (they had previously talked aobut 25). THis probably has more meaning for a UK audience, but I'd be intersted in anyone's thoughts on this proposed policy.

Asha, I think communal living will solve a tremendous amount of issues in a poor economic climate. I also think it's safer for people and probably more satisfying socially. I do believe each person needs a totally private area though, even if it's just a closet sized space for their bed. For an introvert like me (i know i don't seem that way, but i am), I need to spend time apart from people to recharge.
