Hi Everyone,

I am a dog lover, and honestly, I can say I've {rarely} met a dog I didn't like.

But... our neighbors have this giant pit-bull mix, and the flippin' thing won't stop barking at us. It throws itself at the fence, lunges, and barks and barks and barks. I've tried ignoring it, trying to talk to it, I've even fed it crackers and turkey jerky.

The neighbors are like, "well, we'll try to stop him. So sorry." But it just goes on and on and on.

Is there some trick for getting barking, yappy, annoying dogs to be quiet?

Would love to hear these tips myself. The neighbors have two that do the same thing anytime we open our door.

Yeah, this one watches me through the window sometimes when I'm doing dishes - and barks at me.

You could try a boating signal horn. I heard that dogs hate the sound (I think it's really, really high-pitched) and you can get 'em online for cheap.

We have a neighborhood doggie like that. I think he's so cute, but his owners leave him in the backyard for HOURS and he's probably bored out of his mind, poor thing. He barks in the wee hours, so it's super annoying.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Where we live, it is against the rules to let your dog bark like that and mostly after 10pm. I know you don't want to go to this resort, but if you can't talk to your neighbor about all the barking, then you might just have to call the police.

hi deeana. ive just read your post about the bull terrier barking at you? it would be safe if you kept your distance from this dog? when a dog is friendly he stops barking when he is near you after you have spoken to him. i once had a problem like this with an alsation it was absolutely massive and would of had a go at me i know that, it had been a guard dog and the owner set the dog onto me one day to see my reaction, i just stood perfectly still and looked away from its eyes as the owner stood laughing his head off. next day the owner went out and the dog kept lunging at me with its jaws snapping wildly, i went to the shop and bought a big bar off chocolate and threw some for him? he immediately stopped barking and sat down wanting more so i went round to his garden and entered and threw another square till i got close enough to stroke him. i know chocolate isnt good for dogs but this was the only way i could get him to accept me. the owner saw me in the garden and his dog jumping up to lick me, he couldnt fathom out what id done but he knew id done something. he ate nearly half a bar of chocolate, maybe the chocolate didnt harm him, but it put plenty of serotonin in him to calm him down, saying this you can buy chocolate specially made for dogs and maybe the reaction would be the same? its not a dog i would trust so be on your guard at all times even our staffy can be a bit funny but i still dont trust him a hundred percent, my dobermann wont let him near me if hes barking. regards lawrence

It is not down to you to stop the dog barking it is down to the owners. It is barking because it is dominant and protecting its territory. Dogs bark as a warning. It is warning the rest of its pack (its owners) that there are intruders about. It is just doing its job, its the owners who are not!

The owners are not dominant over it. ~They should have a command to stop it. They seem a bit lazy in keeping a dog. Bull terriers are bullies and will become dominant if you let them. They need boundaries and by that I do not mean a fence.

Best thing to do Deanna is not to make any eye contact with it and totally ignore it as you walk past. Making eye contact gives it one up over you. A dominant leader of the pack does not make eye contact with the under dogs, it always turns its head away and averts it eyes. The dog is just being a dog. Time the owners started being responsible owners.

I have four dogs all bull terriers, all of which I trust with my life, and they all bark for different reasons but I can always get them to shut up. I just put my hand up and they stop. But it took a lot of training. Dogs don't do things just because we think they should, they do it if we train them well.
