I recently went to Hawaii on vacation for 2 weeks, leaving my 3-year-old betta Kieran at my aunts house with instructions on how to feed him. When I returned, I noticed a strange white bump on his tail. Its about the same diameter as a pencil's, if a little smaller, and seems to come out of the end of his tail rather than on it. It's gotten bigger since we got home (About a week and a half ago) and seems to be pretty heavy by the way that part of his tail moves when he swims. He doesn't look sick or anything, he acts pretty much as he always has, but it's really worrying me. Does anyone know what this is and if it's treatable?

sounds odd. I would try a nice water clean, then add salt, bettafix and raise the temps. there are lots of good threads about that one in the table of contents thread on top of the forum.

I too am unaware of what this could be. Could you post some pics? If not, do what Jilly says. It is amazing that Bettafix, it really is. I would recommend it to anyone with a Betta.

Pics? I'll try, but I've lost the cable to my digital camera so I'll have to find a way to upload them...
And I cleaned the water and added salt, and I'll see if I can get a hold of that Bettafix. Thank you so much. <3

Alright, I got as many as I could, but he wasn't being very cooperative. >.> Warning, they're really big.

I actually had a betta with the same thing... He was about 3 years old, and had the growth for about a year. I think it was a tumor. It never got bigger, it stayed about the same size as the growth your betta has. You can't do much for a tumor, and it didn't seem to affect my guy at all. I think this could just be caused by old age... a betta's lifspan is only about 3 years (i've heard some people get to 5, but I think that's rare.) Just keep him comfortable and happy.

Oh man, I was worried it was a tumor. That's actually the first thing that came to mind when I saw it, but I really don't know much about bettas, so I had hoped it was something else... T_T Well if it is that, which I REALLY hope it isn't, hopefully it won't really affect him either...

it might be a tumor with some necrosis. The best you can do is make him comfy. DON'T go crazy with meds becuase they probably won't work and they will just make his conditions miserable. Since your little boy is 3, he's lived a nice, full life. And he's acting the same, right? So maybe it won't even bother his quality of life. You're being a good momma to care. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
