I was not surprised when my daughter called to tell me that she had been fired. Part of me "cringed" with concern as she just graduated with her Bachelors and this was her first real job. Yes, she had an internship, but we all know that is not the real world. Now I am trying not to meddle too much and let her figure out this whole thing on her own as she would not listen to mom when I told her the importance of getting to work on time. I used to work in personnel, so knew that they can get you on tardiness if they want. With the recession today, this may be a lesson about "hard times" for her and hopefully a lesson she does not have to learn again. Hey, not mad with her - when I was 24, believe me, I thought I knew it all (lol).

Angela, it's many times easier to help others than it is to help your own kids. My husband worked as an employment counselor for many years but is very careful when giving advice to our kids:)

She will find her way and if she comes to you for advice, then you can give it.

What type of work did she do and what is her degree in?

Our daughter got a degree in architecture, when we thought she should become an engineer. Now she has her 4 year degree but needs a masters to get a license and discovered she really doesn't like architecture enough to invest another 2 years in it.

She has discovered other ways to use her degree though and is focusing on that. Perhaps your daughter could come up with an inovative way to use her degree and create her own business, or use it to go in another direction.

LOL, BoomerGal - I agree with what you stated.

Her degree is in IT, had gotten a Help Desk job - HATED IT!!!

Now pursuing Project Management through an online university.

I was totally against her creating more bills (yes, those student loans/lol). But like you said, I am stepping back. She hid this from me and I found out smile I have learn't my lesson - she is now 24 and mom has to let her figure stuff out for herself.

Thanks for sharing smile

UPDATE:

Well my "princess" called me to tell me that she finally found a job and although it will only be for 6 weeks and starts in another month, she is happy. I reminded her of the importance of treating this "temporary" job like it is a PERMANENT one as one never knows when a temp job turns into a perm. I have had this happen and hope she will LISTEN to me this time around (lol).

Angela, GREAT advice!!! Treat it like it's a real job, because you never know, it may turn into one.

Getting fired is really tough. IF it's solely because of tardiness, that is really rough...but as you said, we live and learn and sometimes lessons need to be learned the hard way.

Congrats to her on her new job -temporary or not!

It's sad how many new college grads can't find work. Hopefully she can land a good job and enjoy it.
