I cut off my long hair a few days ago to sell it. Anyone done this yet? What were your experiences?

Jill:

I have never heard of anyone selling their hair, only giving it to charity.

The media has been covering alot of organizations that use the donated hair to make wigs for both adults and kids who have lost theirs due to illnesses like cancer. This is needed and I wish I had some to cut off and donate. Oh well, maybe one day it will grow enough to do this.

And the neat part about this is that they take all types and colors of hair. Like mine is "salt & pepper" - someone who use to have similar colors would feel comfortable with my hair as a wig.

I did not realize there was a market for this.

And from your picture, it seems that your hair was really long and probably grows quickly.

How long was it before you cut it?

How did you find a buyer?

Do you have to have them cut it, or did you do it yourself and just dropped off your hair?

I'm interested in this, too. My daughters had ridiculously long hair that we cut recently by about 10"...and they still have long hair. I considered donating it, but my husband did some research online and found at least one site where people were selling hair. He said if the hair was healthy and not chemically treated, it might go for $1,000. My charitable side dried up quickly; we could use a chunk of change like that. I haven't actually done it yet, because I want to learn more first, so if anyone else has, I'd love to hear about it, too.

Oh, sorry guys. I forgot to check back on this one. I still have the ponytail all ready to sell. I have not done anything with it. Just moved again and that sucked up most of the month.

Maria, Virgin hair - 10+ inches, one length, not colored or permed, healthy hair unabused by heat or styling products, from a non smoking home, can be worth thousands in the hair markets. $2-$3k. Esp in a desirable color.

I think selling it is perfectly reasonable - it's like growing a crop, or anything else that you made yourself over a long period of time. smile

Angela, I will answer your questions tomorrow - it's 2am here and I needs the bed!

I wish I had known about this. I have cut off my long pony tail (12" long) three times in the past 20 years, but I threw it away!!! I did not know you could sell hair.

I don't colour my hair or do anything with it except tie it up. I have chestnut coloured hair which is down to my waist now. I usually cut it off when I can sit on it and it gets in the way.

I have just measured my pony tail, I have 15 inches of healthy chestnut hair I could cut off!

One of my pony tails was over 24 inches long. That was the first time I cut all my hair off when my eldest son was a small child.

Angela, i cut off 17 inches, but the least most places accept is ten inches.

I have not done anything to sell it yet.

i had it done at a parlor. If you are going to sell it, they want it done there, and have a picture taken that you are doing it.

For donations i imagine you can do it yourself.
