Anyone out there working in the computer field?

What are the pros and cons of this career?

Everything has pros and cons.That depends upon individuals attitude whether that is good or bad.If you want money making career, I will just say love your work, other things will come.Choosing a field is not is not much concerned with pros and cons.

There are so many different jobs in the computer field that it's hard to come up with broad pros and cons. The main common factor I see is that often you are expected to spend time beyond office hours either on-call or doing professional development, so it may not be the best choice if you are just looking for a way to earn a living to support what you really want out of life rather than being interested in the work itself.

Unfortunately those "after hours" seem to be with all careers with the recession and folks needing to make ends meet.

What keeps me encouraged is knowing that the recession has to end.

Hopefully this year.

their are tons of pros and cons for computer career -pros --can work anywhere, almost anytime -cons --you can be outsourced unless you have a degree in computer science, information systems, or degree. Just about any high school graduate will have the same amount of experience you have. make sure you go to technical school or college and get more than just the basics.

yup... well computer field is one of the best field in this era to build a good career...
But there are tons of fields ,, when we say its a computer related field..
I think nowadays each and every field is computer related!!
But going for the high end of computers when we talk about programming or web development,, then yess there are pros and cons as every other field has!!
If you are a programmer, you can only build your career if programming is your passion... or else you will leave yourself in a disaster.. you will be stuck..
In programming you have to give majority of your time for job, and this will be possible for a normal person , only if hes passionate about programming!! its one of the toughest fields. where you have to play with computer languages
Similarly with web designing!!
You have to be a bit creative ... !!

The advantage of being in a computer field is .. your career is set.. and even the income will be fruitful if you work hard!!

I am engaged in the work of search engine optimization. -pros --more casual --you can enjoy the joy of success slowly. -cons --A very deep knowledge,it will take a lot of time to learn,but we always have not so much time to learn at work. However, i agree with "love your work, other things will come".
