So does a weak, floppy handshake automatically indicate a weak indecisive character for instance? A lot of people, particularly women, seem to have difficulty shaking hands "firmly", which I find makes me tend to draw back and slot them into the "weak", "wishy washy" folder, but perhaps I am being unfair!

I think some people maybe just aren't too comfortable with the physical contact of a handshake albeit very minimal contact but contact nevertheless. I know I wouldn't judge a person on their handshake alone, but more in the manner that accompanied it and any subsequent conversation. If you are drawing back when you encounter a non firm handshake then you could risk being perceived wrongly as unfriendly and as a result close down any channels that may have otherwise been open to you. So you might unknowingly be turning the tables on yourself?

Hi Isabel, no, a weak shake does not automatically suggest indecisiveness. In fact, there are many cultures whereby it is polite to shake more weakly than the other person, depending on the heirarchy. Then there are the business situations where people match the squeeze of the other person to demonstrate their similarities. Also see: Handshakes and the Secrets They Tell (JOY)

Youre quite right! Also, look at the other non-contact greetings like the Namaste in India, or the bow in Japan. A handshake is only a small part of the overall body language one picks up. (JOY)

People think this. Most people probably. Is it true? Who knows. Maybe it shows you're scared of meeting people? I'm turned off more by guys who have to crush your hand to prove they're macho or something. Yuck.

Hi Kari, I wonder if those guys do not realise just how strong their 'hand-crush' is! (JOY)

I never think that. It may be someone who is sick or shy or any other reason other than being weak. Just like when people think that when someone does not look others in the eyes it means that that person is lying does not necessarily mean that.
