Over the past year or so, there has been an influx of TV shows about families with multiples: jon and kate plus 8, 19 kids and counting, etc. I am CF but, of course, respect the choice of others to have kids. However, multiples (especially 19...ugh!!) seems...excessive. Just makes me wonder why anyone would choose to have that many children and why others are facinated with these shows. Is it just the drama? Any thoughts??

I've noticed the influx, too. I have to say that I was repulsed when I saw an interview with the "19 and counting" lady when she said that she was going to continue popping out babies until she couldn't anymore, then she was going to start adopting!! Really...she's become less of a person and more of a puppymill! I never watch her show, but I watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 for a few months just because their marriage was such a train wreck.

I have never watch those shows. octomom and such grosses me out.
But I have a theory as to why they do it. I know some people dont plan for triplets, it just happens but when you have 19 kids that is nuts.
anywho, I once knew an animal hoarder who always had to be surrounded by animals. she had 22 dogs and god knows how many cats. but she did it because there was some sort of void within her that she was trying to fill with the love of animals or just having them around. what if it is the same for people who have 20 kids...? they are trying to fill some sort of emptiness within them and think having a dozen babies will do it?
Plausable?

Marie, the idea of filling a void makes sense. I hear friends say they just don't feel complete, so they keep having more and more kids. After a few kids, they say they still don't feel complete. I can't tell them to try something other than 6 kids though. My suggestion of volunteering time at a nursing home usually doesn't go over well at all.

Maybe they're child-hoarders. You know, some people hoard tons of animals and possibly even think they're the only ones in the world who can care for these animals even though a lot of them are sick or dead from the over crowding? At least that's what the 19 and counting people remind me of.
