My local gardening supply place seems to have very limited plants and flowers. I know that they tend to carry what will thrive locally but I live in a region that can sustain a wide variety of flora. I'm a little hesitant to order from catalogs. How do plants survive the shipping process?

What has your experience been with ordering plants from catalogs? Can you recommend any good gardening catalog companies?

I have had good luck ordering plants from specialty companies; one of my favorites is Brown's Ferry Gardens in SC, they specialize in daylilies and their plants always arrive in great shape. These companies will ship the plants when they are dormant, so they can withstand a few days in transit when the weather is not too cold or too hot. I'm sure that there must be good companies on the West coast, ask around among your gardening friends.
However I learned early on not to bother with those giant plant companies that advertise huge varieties of amazing plants at hard-to-resist prices. Too many disappointments and dead plants.

I live in an apt but like to watch QVC when they are selling plants. The Vendor tells the buyer they ship to your part of the country when you are able to safely plant. They apparently know how to package for shipping so the plants make it safely to your house. They also guarantee the plants and will replace them if necessary. I would find someone like that company that is reputable. Usually a website will state their shipping and return policies.

Burpee, Parkseed, there are a number of old time seed and plant companies that you can depend on.

I would say if it is a well-known company, you are safe. Most offer a satisfaction guarantee. I have ordered from Brecks, and Parkseed and the plants arrive in good condition.

Are you looking for seeds, bulbs, rhizomes, or bare root plants? I have found that searching the national association websites for growers of the particular flower you are looking for is the best resources. The growers and nursery's linked to their pages have some of the healthiest plants and the greatest variety. Once you have made an inquiry you will receive one of their catalogues once or twice a year as well.
