The article posted today on the Senior Issues page is about giving up freedom. When my mother had to give up her car and driver's license, she became totally dependent on me for transportation. This was a difficult time for both of us. I know the day will come when I will no longer be able to drive, but it doesn't make it any easier to think about. The thought of giving up the freedom to go and come as I please is depressing. Have you had to deal with this issue yet? If so, how are you coping?

Hope to hear from you!

Diane

Because of my health issues, I'm already giving up some things, like travel (even to the next town over). It's difficult. I'm lucky that I have a wonderful friend and roommate that takes care of me (she's also an RN, and stubborn, and bossy sometimes LOL). My sons are all grown, but don't live here, so luckily my friend and I had needs that we could meet in each other. She needed someone to help care for her aged dog (he's still around 5 years later) and was ending a marriage, so living with me helped her meet her living needs.

I shudder at the thought of someday possibily giving up my computers, sewing machines and yarns. Giving up my dogs would absolutely upset me to no end (I have 3 all lapdogs). Not to mention, I'd have to live on someone else's schedule. For me, that's a real challenge

I haven't had to give up any freedom yet but watched as my mother and daughter did. It was heartbreaking but when the time comes I'm going to try to smile through it and accept. Easier said than done but what choice do we have.

You have the right attitude beebee. We do have a choice, but when we choose to accept our situation we will be much happier with our choice. Giving up freedom will be difficult. Unfortunately, we will all be in that situation eventually.

Thanks for posting to the forum!
