Is it just me, or does an Australian accent send shivers down your spine? smile

There was even an episode in House where Chase was on a dating run and House told him to "lose the accent" in order to prove that even without that "big advantage", his looks would still get him dates. smile

Can anyone from USA detect the difference between an Australian accent and a New Zealand accent?

I'm from Canada (we kinda talk like some Americans), and I can't. Though, I had to Youtube a New Zealander (is that even the term?) to compare the accents. There are not a lot of New Zealanders where I live.

Honestly (and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this) I have a hard time distinguishing between Irish/Scottish/English/Welsh and Australian/New Zealand accents from one another; unless I'm really, really paying attention. Or unless someone throws in a "G'day", or an "Och, aye". Then I can usually tell :P

I think I might be just really bad at accents; a statistical outlier, you might say. Surely not everyone in North America is as bad as I am.

I was in New Zealand last Fall, and my hosts had some things to say about the difference between NZ and Aussie accents! After a week or so I definitely could tell if the TV program I was watching was local or an Aussie import, in fact I sometimes had a hard time understanding the Australians. But don't ask me to explain the differences, I just know that I could hear them.

Well I must admit I can't tell the difference between US and Canadian accents so I suppose it is a bit of an ask to expect North Americans to detect AU and NZ accents. It really is only the vowel sounds that are different.

To Australians the New Zealand "fish and chips" sounds like "fush and chups" and the Aussie sound like "feesh and cheeps". To NZers, the Aussie "six" can sound like "sex".

The difference in the accents is in the vowels - particularly "i" and "e"

New Zealanders tend to pronounce "i" and "e" more like "uh"

When you have an Aussie and an Kiwi together and get them to pronounce the same words, then you really can tell the difference.

However - often even Aussies and Kiwis don't even really notice.
