I think it has to do with your temperament. Dogs are excitable, active, and demanding of attention. Cats are laid back, quiet and peaceful (mostly).
I enjoy my various friend's dogs, but couldn't live with that much uproar on a daily basis. My cats are serene companions, they are a calming influence that I find very satisfying.

It also depends on what breed of dog or cat. Greyhounds are very laid back (cat-like?) in the house, while border collies are notoriously active (possibly even hyperactive!). Persian cats are laid back and serene, however, Abyssinians or Bengals can be as in-your-face and troublesome as any dog. Moggies or mix breeds can fall into either category or anywhere in between.
