Hello, I just started working on my first crochet pattern. It is a zig zag blanket and I am stuck on the first row. I did a chain stitch of 225 and then I turned and followed the instructions to make the first row of zig zags. Now it says to fasten off. Turn. 224 sts. I fastened off and now i don't know what to do. I know the sts means stitches, but im not sure how to do them. Can someone please help me figure this out. Thank you!

Hi slambert, and welcome to BellaOnline.

Are you making a "ripple afghan"? Those are so pretty!

Here is a link that might help you:
How to crochet zigzag

This is a simple pattern that uses only the single crochet stitch.

When your instructions say "fasten off and turn", that means to fasten off like you did then begin to start the next row by making a chain and crochet back to the end of this row. I am assuming you had to fasten off in order to pick up another color.

To me fasten off means you are through with the color you just used, so just cut the yarn leaving a short tail - several inches long (6 inches), which will be woven in later, pulling tail through the last stitch to lock it in place. Turn. Then pick up the next color and continue across. If you are only doing a few rows and picking up this color again at the same edge, I would just carry the color along the edge.

If you are not using other colors, then there is no need to fasten off, just turn and continue the next row across.

What stitch are you having trouble with? With zigzag there is usually a decrease at the bottom of the V and increase at the top of the V.

First let me say that if you had posted your question as new, you might have had more responses to your question. It seems to have gotten lost here posted with another question.

bptr dec = back post treble decrease -- (called Treble Decrease) -- Work a treble in the next stitch (without completing the last step) Work a treble in the next stitch (without completing the last step) Now yarn over and draw through all loops on the hook.

(called Treble Next Two Stitches Together) -- Yo twice, insert hk in next st, yo & draw through lp, yo & draw through 2 lps, yo & draw through 2 lps, (2 lps on hk)yo twice, insert hk in next st, yo & draw through lp, yo & draw through 2 lps, yo & draw through 2 lps, (3 lps on hk)yo and draw through all 3 lps.

Well, she has a back post treble crochet decrease around the same stitch as her chain 4. This sounds like it's at the beginning of the row.

So, she's just completed a row, done a ch4 and turned.

Now, you will yo twice and go down to the last trc of the previous row.Wrap your hook around that stitch (from the right front around the back side of the stitch and out through the left front side. YO, draw up a loop and complete your trc as usual. Now, if we're all giving you directions that doesn't sound like it's what your pattern is wanting you to do, you need to let us know so that we can find out exactly what it is that you're doing and we can steer you right.
