This is a question about the ethics of money and life.

Is it worth the cost of society to support people who are too ill to pay for their own medical care? What if these people will never be a productive member of society? Should the government system be burdened by their care?

I ask because I feel bad that my adult daughter requires expensive medical care that is paid for by Medicare (for now). However, with this care, she is capable of being an asset to society in one way or another because she can function mentally and physically.

What about those who cannot? Should the government pay to support these people? Do you mind paying taxes in order to do so?

What if they are terminal? What if they are born with severely life-limiting disorders? What if they are emotionally or mentally ill? What if they are addicts?

And then...

Do you feel the same about supporting criminals by paying for their needs for their entire lifetime while incarcerated?

I'm just curious about what people think.

I think it a real travesty that we even have to discuss such things. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If we, as a species, are ever to be truly "civilized" we will finally understand that we must take care of all of earth's citizens. No one should have to worry about their next meal, their medications, their health - this is a line that definitely should never have been crossed in the name of capitalistic venture.

What if we put as much effort into saving humans and taking care of humans as we do animals and trees...
