My Grandma crocheted my Mom a hat many years ago. I am trying to crochet a new hat for my mom, but cannot figure out what crochet stitches she used on the "circle". If anyone could help, that would be great. I have a picture of the hat with the circle, but do not have it on a webpage. I can email the picture.....
Thanks!!

I am having trouble understanding a direction in my pattern for a hat. It reads: Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp; ch 1;
*sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from * around; sk first sc' join in next ch-1 sp.
I understand slip stitch and chain and single crochet, but can't seem to find ch-1 and ch-1 sp in my "how to" books.
Thank you for any help you can provide. I hate not being able to go on with my project!

Hi Karenina, if you email me the pic I can try to help. There are a few ways to create a ring to start a circle. Do you need help on trying to create a circle or how to crochet in the circle? Usually, the beginning stitches for the ring are either a single or double crochet stitch.
Mrs. Taters, a ch-1 means to crochet one chain (chain 1) and that is the same stitch you used to make the first row of your work (chaining on). You simply pull the yarn through your loop that is already on your hook. That is a ch-1.
The ch-1 sp means the space that is created in the ch-1. Usually, the directions call for you to insert your crochet hook into a ch-1 space when you see ch-1 sp.
Both of you can try to search youtube.com for videos plus other crochet sites with pics. I can't list them here but do a search for crochet how-to.
Karenina, I know there is a youtube video on crocheting a ring.

The ch-1 sp will be where you did a chain 1 in the previous row. Chain 1 means the same as it did if you started with a beginning chain foundation. Just yarn over hook and pull through loop already on the hook.

Just wondering did you receive Karenina's picture. I have it but it is hard for me to figure out the stitch after the circle part. It could be puffs or the like I think. If you didn't get it I can send it to you.

Hello all
I'm trying to crochet a cardigan for the first time and it's driving me nuts!
The pattern says: rows 2 - 5 form the patt
Patt 3 more rows
Does this mean a) crochet rows 2 - 5 THREE more times = 12 more rows
or
b) crochet rows 2 - 4? (as in crochet THREE more rows)
Later on the instructions say Patt 25 more rows....
so I need to understand this Patt business or this cardigan will turn into a blanket!

Without the pattern in front of me, my best guess would be work the pattern rows 3 more times + 12 rows. I have always found the best method for interpreting these type of instructions is to do one repeat of the pattern (or block or whatever the piece might be) and then hold it up. Does it look the correct length for that portion of the piece, whether it be the yoke, the armholes, etc. If yes, then the instructions meant a total of 3 rows. If no, then the instructions probably want you to repeat the 4 pattern rows 3 times for a total of 12 rows.
