We had a coatimundi years ago. It was a fun pet and affectionate, but we couldn't keep him in his cage. He was an escape artist and would be out ever time we left the house.

Many animals are skilled escape artists they can put a good human robber to shame. I am still trying to figure out how a mastiff impregnated a female through a metal door. If there's a will there is a way.

How beauitful! A very pleasant read for a Saturday morning, thank you. Your coatimundi story reminds me of many camping trips when we were visited by raccoons. Once we had a box of donuts and some other goodies in the boat which was parked at our campsite. The next morning there were crumbs and pawprints all over the place. The next night we locked everything in the car. The foot prints were on the car handles trying to get inside the car. They also lifted each and every minnow out of our minnow buckets. What thrifty little bandits these animals are!

A very warm welcome to the exotic pets forum!

Diana, You know these animals are really extrinically motivated (goal oriented..get that food). If they were taught with classical and operant conditioning who knows what they could do. But things are always different in a natural setting!

I am lucky the raccoon's paws lack an opposable thumb, we had the car keys in the tent, or otherwise they would have had the food and the car smile You could tell by the paw prints they had a good idea of how the handle worked. They are highly motivated. We often thought they were nearby, at night, watching us. Sure enough, we put some goodies out, and went for a little drive through the park. We camped during the winter and the park was closed so we had the place to ourselves. We came back to the campsite and they cleaned out everything we had left out for them.
