"It would be so refreshing to read a quote from even one of these celebrities that they are CF and happy to be so and that they intend to saty that way.....Or is that just me being naive now?" That's why I love George Clooney. Among other reasons. :) Did anyone see Grey's Anatomy last week? The whole theme was basically how having kids is the only great thing in life, and how if you don't you'll be worse off in one way or another.

Ellavemia, my husband and I have seen these movies and the one with the adoption plus pregnancy was annoying to us, too! I guess it's like a CFC woman I used to know told me, "Not wanting kids is almost like being gay. You are surrounded by a society where many cannot relate to you." I just thought of that after reading your post..Imagine how homosexual couples feel...how many movies are out there made centered around a homosexual couples lives and issues? Not many. Us CFCs are one of the minority groups and the sooner we accept that the easier it will be. In the meantime, we can sit back hoping that one day we will be recognized, and let the "baby makes marriage complete/ happier" myth perpetuate...as more and more children's parents are divorcing.

Jewlsrus, I did read in a magazine, a quote from Cameron Diaz, who does say she is happy to be child free and enjoys a full life. She says she is surprised more people are not, and says that it is better for the environment...So at least there are a few celebrities!

I haven't been here in a while, but I had to respond to this: I TOTALLY AGREE!

The movies are irritating, but there is not escape from it in in literature, either. I read what I thought was going to be a great book about the love life of a larger woman (something totally relatable for many of us, right?), but guess what? She (accidentaly) gets pregnant and through some ups and downs, reaches total life fulfillment, the end. It bummed me out. It just wasn't the story I had hoped for. It had some good moments and it was not a bad read, don't get me wrong, but it just left me feeling flat.

There is a book I saw called "Baby Proof" which I have not read yet, but it's about a couple who swears off children. Then, one day, one of them changes his or her mind. From the sounds of it, it may have ended with the couple remaining child free, but I can't be sure. (I can only hope!)

On the subject of celebrities, I also read that quote from Cameron Diaz. I also read a very respectable comment from a pre-Jesse James Cheating Scandal Sandra Bullock. He already had one or two from previous marriages and she approached motherhood with a very realistic point of view. She basically said that if it wasn't meant to be, it was OK. There were more important things in the world to take care of. Good for you. But I'm biased. I've always loved Sandra Bullock.

I have never been a huge romantic comedy fan as a rule. They're forumlaic and unrealistic (I know they're fiction, but I still want to be able to relate to something on the tiniest level. It makes it more meaningful to me.) The ones I like are few and far between and, as I think on them, do not involve children as a fix-all theme. May I suggest "Love, Actually" as such a film? It's several stories that intermingle, but no one's problems are solved with babies! Hooray!

Good topic! What's the new one? "The Backup Plan," I think. Crimeny, what a waste of celluloid.

Apple Blossum, I know what book you're talking about at the beginning of your post, and I swear ALL of that author's books have the same theme. She obviously can't write about a reality different from her own life. And I read "Baby Proof" -- I guess I would just say don't get your hopes up. (That's not a spoiler, but as a fence-sitter myself, it certainly rubbed me the wrong way with its simplistic plot resolution. And I like Emily Giffin's books.)

Try "Bet Me" by Jennifer Crusie. The main couple in this story is childfree and stays that way. Plus it's a very cute & amusing story. I was also a bit let down by the end of baby proof; it didn't seem to resolve anything.

I so sympathize!I love chick lit, but I've had to fling so many books at the wall because they spoiled everything with a gratuitous pregnancy. Try 'No Kidding' by Wendy Nelson Tokunaga. "Anyone but You"by Jennifer Crusie is good as well.

It is still surprising because so many older shows and movies had child-free heroines: in the 60s the original Avengers had Emma Peel working as a spy with John Steed. Because it was the 60s they made her married but never showed her husband, and she didn't have any children. An Affair to Remember had the couple meet and fall in love but no mention of kids...ditto Sabrina and Annie Hall.

Yes I saw the trailer for the Backup plan. (no spoilers here) She doesn't want to wait for the right guy and wants to be a mother so much she gets invitro. That day she meets mr. right, and from the looks of it, he falls in love and wants to be the father! How tidy!

At least with movies like The Backup Plan you know what you're getting going in and so you have a choice to avoid it (and I will be!) It's these surprises that bug the heck out of me. Truth be told, my husband is actually the one who prefers the romcoms but I don't mind. I like action, straight comedy, or thrillers but he like mushy stuff. Hot Tub Time Machine is excellent, by the way. There are no "surprises" and we laughed the whole way through. As for books, luckily I prefer sci-fi and fantasy fiction novels to romance and chick lit. What a drag it would be to get all involved in your characters only to have them throw some silly baby angle into play when you're not expecting it.
