Dianne, many thanks for your comment. The sad thing is that these are the children who remember the incident forever. Look at just how many adults have low self-esteem and a lack of self-confidence due to experiences in their childhood. (JOY)
that is very much true. i know of people who have been affected with words which caused low self esteem. about the quote "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" - i believe that words can really hurt and cause pain to people even if others do not realize it.

Hi Wafer, youre right. And for many people the quote "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" does not ring true words can truly be far more painful.

Unfortunately the person saying the words quite often does not realise the pain they can cause. When you get hurt like that your entire body goes very hot, you get a huge rush of emotions from the tips of your toes to the top of your head, your hair feels like its standing on edge and your eyes start to well up with tears.

One of the best things you can do is to be your own mentor in the following way visualise a huge palm (a hand, not a tree!) coming straight towards you with the word STOP! written across it. You see nothing else but that word. Its just a little tip but you will find that it immediately takes the focus off the situation and does indeed prevent your flood of emotions from taking over your entire body. (JOY)

I agree. I can see the point that sometimes we just joke, and that too many restrictions can make it hard for teachers to relate to kids, but I think this crosses the line. Kids tend to blow things off on the surface, but that doesn't mean it doesn't impact them. (For that matter, we adults tend to do this too!)
