I'm a WAHM (Work at home Mom) and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the flexibility of being able to do the work I love whilst being available for my kids.

My only problem with the stay at home mom scenario is this: what are these folks going to do in a worse case scenario? A worst case scenario could be one partner or the other abandons ship; it could be death, expected or otherwise; or someone could unexpectedly quit a job, or, in this bad economy, lose one through no fault of their own. Savings accounts for these scenarios can only go so far, and then SOMEONE has to be working. This is why I work outside the home.

I'm a working mom who aspired to one day be a WAHM. I did the SAHM for about a year when my youngest was born. I applaud SAHM's, I was ready to pull my hair out after the first couple of months. I think if I had engaged in more activities, it would have been better. My hubby said I could stay at home back then but would need to realize the money would be tight (an understatement since he was only in his 2nd year of the Marine Corp at the time).
I think people need to do what feels right for them.

I have been a SAHM for over 11 years and my husband and I have good investments for retirement. We also have good life insurance plans so that God forbid something happens to my hubby, my daughter and I are taken care of. Now with this being said, I have been a WAHM for 5 years and bringing in an income also. My SIL has three kids and can barely make it the 6 weeks she took at home after each kid was born. To each their own...life is too short to no do what you like! I love working from home and it works for us:)

Well, working moms tend to forget, just because a woman happens to be a SAHM doesnt mean she has no skills and could not get a job or follow through with a career if "worst case scenario" happened. I'm a SAHM of 2 small children (5 yr old boy and 11 month old girl) for a little over 5 years now. If something were to happen to my husband, I have 2 degrees and skills in many professions to fall back on if I need to. Even without a savings or life insurance, I am still capable of going out into the big bad world and being hired at a legitimate place of employment to make the necessary funds to keep myself and my kids not only alive but comfortable. I applaud working moms, WAHMs and other SAHMs because being a Mom is difficult enough, but as everyone knows, our jobs never end!

I also think it depends on the person. I know some stay at home moms that are busy sun up to sun down and some that just sit down. Same with working moms. Sometimes being present at work does not always mean that you're working.

Hi, I'd been working mom for more than five years. But now for the sake of my five months old son, I'm a SAHM. And I'm happy to stay at home. I'm also searching a way to be WAHM.

I'm so glad that the Moms here have been understanding of each other's choices and that this discussion hasn't become a Mommy War. As Diane pointed out we all need to do what's right for us.
