I know you're supposed to plant daffodils in the fall. My problem is I never remember where the existing ones are and I don't want to dig them up by accident when planting the new ones.

So my current plan is to plant them in the spring as soon as the ground gets soft, and when I can see the sprouts from the other existing daffodils. The new ones might not sprout this year - but then they'll be ready to sprout next year.

Will this work?

That should work for having them come up in 2011. Then they get the full cold season they need.

That is my hope. Since it's really my only chance at planting them - other than I suppose digging up the whole bed which I just am not going to do - I figure I might as well give it a shot. Another few weeks and the ground should be soft enough.

If it works for volunteers it should work for your additions smile

Daffodils need 10 to 12 weeks of cold period. Some spring bulb may help you. Paper whites may work. My daffodils have bloomed (including the miniature one). I'll love to post them, but don't know how to do it.

I have planted bulbs in early spring but I needed to trick the bulbs by placing the bulbs in a brown bag then I added some peat moss and a few drops of water. In addition, I placed the bag in the crisper section of my refrigerator. I left the bulbs in the refrigerator for 6 to 8 weeks. I then took the bulbs out and planted them in containers. The tulips and daffodils grew, however the blooms were small and the foliage was not healthy. I think a force growing such as this is hard on the bulb. It is better to plant your spring bulbs in the fall and use markers so in spring you will know where all of your spring flowers are. Overall, spring bulbs need a nice cozy sleep throughout a cold winter, and when they awake in spring and start to bloom, they will be healthy and beautiful.
