I found a great pattern on line which shows a childs hat which is started at the bottom with some knitting and then changes to crochet: *slip 2, 3 trebles* - kind of like a granny square in the round. How do I decrease this hat going bottom up? Please help. Thank you

This is what it says for the top
>>>For the the round top, I started with gradually decreasing the number of slip stitches {chs} between trebles [dc}, then placing trebles between trebles on the previous rows.<<<<<

I looked at the top of the picture and you might get and idea what she means by looking at that. If not I will try it later on today.
To me This hat is done in British terms so the trebles are dc and the sl sts are chains. It's strange she doesn't allow a picture to be saved though which I like to have if I'm doing a pattern.

Thank you so much for clarifying the fact that it is in British terms and secondly I'd really appreciate any help you may give me later when you have time. The hat is for my 3 year old granddaughter. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you! Chrys

Sometimes I get lucky and yahoo searches work using the directions posted.

Do you understand how the pattern starts after the ribbing is knitted? It isn't very descripted so you have to basicly know how the rounds are started. Is there something you don't understand about that?

It starts by puting a rnd of sc on the knitted part. Then You do some rounds as stated and then to dec rounds you might *ch 2 between the first set of 3 dcs and then ch 1 bet the next set* and repeat around, or ch 1 only between dcs depending on how you want it to get smaller. Then to dec some more you can do the round with 3dcs in the chain spaces only leaving out the ch 2 between them.

Thank you! I tried doing this but going from 2 chains to 1 chain only decreases the second row by 1 chain between each group of dc - therefore it would just go straight up like a tube. If I leave out the chains anywhere, the hat would not look like a granny square in the round. Have you been able to see the picture. That's what the hat looks like: knit on bottom and then a granny square in the round all the way to the top (getting smaller). So I still don't understand how I can get it decreased enough. All other crocheted hats go from top to bottom. If you have time can you try to explain it once more - the hat is so cute. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME - I just don't get it. Chrys

Is the pattern you are looking at the one on Flickr by Strikkelise's photostream/tag/Strikkelisepatterns. It is called: crocheted hat with knitting (pink with a flower on the side). Thanks, chrys

Yes that's the pattern. It's a cute pink hat with a flower. Iv'e been trying it and if I decrease the chains gradeuly and do some without chs I do get the look like the picture. I figured out how to save the picture. I am doing it in WW so I will have to try it in a different yarn and go by the picture to see how the rnds go for that size. It might take a while.

Hi, I did it in baby yarn by doing a rnd of sc but not the knitted part and it gets smaller gradeuly. The pattern says rows but it is done in rnds by joining each one. I did 3 rnds with the 2 ch bet. then 3 with 1 ch and then 4 with out chs in bet. I pulled the top tog for 2 rnds by doing a dc dec in the last dc of the first 3dc group and the first dc of the next group. To pull the top tog more I did sc decreases around.

THANK YOU SO MUCH - YOU ARE AMAZING. I just thought that you had to have at least one chain below into which you would do the group of 3 dc's. All the other patterns that I found were done from the top down. Apparently, I will just crochet 3 dc's in the row below in between every group of 3 dc's and this way - enough room will be stretched in between. (I hope this makes sense) Thank you once again for ALL YOUR WORK, HELP AND ADVICE - I am now going to try it and I will let you know. I just thought my granddaughters would look so cute in this. Oh, thank you for the picture as well - in the one I have you can't really tell what she did.
