We just had the great opportunity to help out at a camp for kids with Autism and Down Syndrome as an entire family - that was a fantastic experience!
My oldest son (18) has Asperger's himself, so he and my husband worked together, but my 12 yr old daughter got to be what was called a "camp buddy" all on her own. She buddied with an 8 yr old little boy (who also has Asperger's) - and watching her interract with him was absolutely wonderful!
She is also insistent that that I not go by myself to buy the "Angel Ornament" Christmas gift this year (our church has angel ornaments that you choose and it has a boy or girl, their age, and something they wished for for Christmas). She wants to go with me to pick it out.
This is my child who is all about empathy - it just comes naturally to her. The boys take a little more prodding.
