What is this wet on wet painting technique I hear about? Someone mentioned a person that did art lessons on TV. I happened to notice your forum on the list and I am very courious about this painting form. Thank you

Wet on wet is a watercolor technique where the paper is completely wet and the paint is dropped in so that it will spread and make soft edges. That's the simple answer; after a lot of experimentation you learn to control the amount of water and paint so that the color spreads just where and how much you want to get the effect you are looking for.

wet on wet is a type of oil painting where it is possible to do a painting in one sitting. heavy oil paint is applied to the canvas and a thinner layer is applied on top of it in layers. On tv Bob Ross has shows on PBS channels, he paints landscapes in oil. other painters use this method as well. I use it in combo with other types of techniques. fun, easy,

I paint on wet canvas/paint (with acrylics) to blend colors better...gives my backgrounds more depth and also if I happen to "make" a color that I cannot duplicate it makes it easier to blend in a new one.

All three of the above replies are correct. Wet on wet refers to painting over a wet layer underneath, regardless of the type of paint you are using. Watercolors, oils and acrylics or about any type of paint can all be used with this method.

It is easily done with oils because of the long drying time of the medium.

Wet on wet watercolors are fairly easily done by wetting the paper before applying color. Lots of beautiful effects can be achieved this way.

Acrylics are very difficult to keep wet enough to do the blending, but it is possible, especially with additives to extend the open time.

Perhaps I should do an article on this! Thanks for the idea!

Wet-on-wet is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. This technique requires a fast way of working, because the art work has to be finished before the first layers have dried. It goes right back to the origins of oil painting, and was used by several of the best Early Netherlandish painters in parts of their pictures, such as Jan van Eyck in the Arnolfini portrait, and Rogier van der Weyden.
