I have both a personal page on Facebook where I connect to primarily my family, and then I have fan pages for the websites I run.

If for example I had random wine fans who liked my WineIntro site, I would want them to hear about my wine updates. I don't think I'd want them to hear about my stomach ache though smile So this is a way of providing business related content to people who are fans of your business - without mixing it into your very personal stream.

Do you have fan pages for your business projects? Have you let business contacts into your Facebook stream?

I have been debating starting a fan page for my blog for a while now. I think the thing keeping me back is the fact that I don't really like self-promotion. But part of me really does want to start a fan page--especially if it brings more readers/traffic.

(Have the fan pages been beneficial for you, Lisa? What's your experience so far?)

I just made my WineIntro site today so that is just being set up. I do like being able to organize my photos, links and notes in there so that Facebook fans can easily get to them all and recommend them. So it seems to be a good thing.

On BellaOnline, somehow I created two separate fan pages. One is associated with my Lisa Shea (normal) profile. The second, somehow I created an entirely separate BellaOnline profile associated with that BellaOnline facebook page. So I need to shut one of these down. I think I am going to shut down the one that has the separate profile. There's no need for a separate profile in Facebook. It will just make me even more confused than I am now smile

So the final setup once I get through this all will be:

* One Lisa Shea profile I log into, that has my personal family and friends associated with it.

---- It runs the WineIntro fan page for my Wine Intro fans

---- It runs the BellaOnline fan page for my BellaOnline fans

Yeah, it does seem to be a good thing. smile I'll probably have to just get off my butt and set something up.

I don't know if I'd want to mix business and personal contacts, though. I think that could be a bit strange (just like you mentioned). Though I guess it's also a matter of just how "personal" you get with your personal page.

A fan page is COMPLETELY separate from your personal page. They don't ever see who the admin of the page is. So unless you choose to deliberately become a fan of your fan page, your fan page is 100% separate.

Oh, that's good to know, actually. Makes me less anxious about starting one. smile

Great idea! Are there instructions on how to set up a fan page? Write now I use it mostly to communicate with "friends" I think a separate one would be an excellent idea.

I really don't post personal stuff though. It's usually an article or to reply to someone elses post. I think the most personal thing I ever wrote was on New Years eve when I said that I woke up at 11:56 pm on the 31st.

It's almost absurdly easy to set up a fan page - go here:
make a fan page on facebook

You pick a category, and then title your page. Hit Create Page. That's it. smile

Then you can go in and prettify it with photos, logos, links, wall posts, etc.

Here is my fan page I created for RunPee - RunPee Facebook page

I agree that any person who runs a website really should look into having a facebook fan page. It's a great way to keep your facebook fans aware of updates and changes you've made. Lots of people spend all day long on Facebook. You are talking to them in their "home location" this way.

I started a fan page a couple of weeks ago and I'm happy I did. I linked to Twitter so my fan page posts automatically get tweeted.

It's nice because you can give people a description of your business and let them know what you're doing.

Thanks for the suggestion,
