The oil painting is called la "Dama Con Ermellino" (the woman with an Ermine) and is displayed in Karkow, Poland. Ermine, like a ferret, is in its white winter coat which symbolizes purity. The woman is a 16 year old girl, Cecilia Gallerani, and she was from a large family that was neither rich not noble and was chosen (it's believed) for her "beauty, scholarship and poetry". wink

This is one of only four female portraits that Leonardo painted, the most famous being the Mona Lisa.

This the Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who actually did 2 oil paintings in 1563, on the same subject of the construction of the tower in Genesis 11:4. The Tower of Babel is displayed in Vienna while his other painting of the same subject, The "Little" Tower of Babel, is displayed in Rotterdam.

Phyllis, thank you for showing us the Bruegel painting.

Welcome babyquacker and good job identifying the painting.

Let's see if you can stump these smart people in the Art Appreciation Forum?

Can you imagine trying to find your way around inside that tower? It would be fun. I love that painting. Every time I look at it, I see something I did not see or notice before.

Yes, Phyllis, the Bruegel tower is amazing.

I don't think I'd want to get lost inside. It might be a story from the Bible but it seems more of a nightmare to me.

Just think how exhausting it would be to try to find your way if you used the outer passages. The people building the tower had a few misconceptions, didn't they?

Now that the holidays are over and we have had a short hiatus, let's begin again by identifying wonderful works of art.

Does anyone know who the artist is who painted this famous work?

That is a beautiful painting, Camille. I do not recall seeing it before, but the style is familiar. I will have to research some painters first before I take a stab at guessing.

Happy New Year to you!

It's symbolic and is either representative of something mythological or religious. The dog has definite meaning. I wish I could make it bigger to get some more detail, so I'm going to guess and it's a wild one: Della'Abate.
