In reality, I, the employer will either fire John to make room in the budget to keep the rest of the staff, or I will raise the price of my product,

But either option would be your decision, maintaining your own high standard of living as a business owner at the expense of either your customers or your staff. Generally most business owners don't want to scare off customers with high prices so they keep the staff wage bill down instead.

Not necessarily, if people on obscenely high salaries and benefits took a cut and passed this on to those on the lower end of the scale thus reducing the gap between rich and poor then the poorest would have more money to spend on goods produced by businesses and the economy would grow.

People should be paid enough to ensure they have a decent standard of living, access to health care, and other incentives such as training programmes and career opportunities. At the moment, in many cases, this isn't happening.

Big Alignment, That is why America is called the land of opportunity. Everyone has the opportunity to get ahead. People do not need to sit in chairs and wait for someone to give them what they need. People make the opportunities to go out and improve their lots in life. Sometimes people need to work more than one job to do so. A hand is one thing in tough times; handouts throughout life is another thing. The government is not and never has been the answer.

Do you think Bill Gates is obscenely rich? He started out working in his garage and created a product that to this point has changed the world and built a huge company. Look at Paul Orfalea, the founder of Kinkos. He started out with one shop. I know a young guy who started a landscaping business in high school. He has built a wonderful small business and has hired about 12 people. Do they not deserve what they have earned? Also, many businesses to do not have a large margin of profit. I know the young guy is not rich but he is doing well but he's got the American spirit - INITIATIVE.

Now, if they were taking a huge income and driving the company along with the investors to bankruptcy, then that is a different story. But, where are the investors? They need to vote the slate out and fix the company, not the government. You shouldn't just send your proxy vote in to the annual meeting and not pay attention to what is going on in the company.

I think you need to take a business class and read some alternative history books. Text books and newspapers do not tell you the whole story. I wish Paul Harvey was here to tell you the rest of the story.

I already own and run my own successful company thank you very much, which is why I'm aware how hard it is to set one up.

The two examples you mention are from middle class families, and no doubt had full financial and personal support from their families. Not everyone is quite so lucky.

I'm quite repulsed by the 'every man for himself' attitude in this thread. It's not nice.

I believe we probably ought to call a halt to this debate before it starts to degenerate.

It is obvious that none of us are going to change the minds of the other side - so it would be best to agree to disagree at this point.

There are good points made on both sides; if this were a perfect world - then this discussion and politics would be a moot point. Unfortunately it is not, and it is left up to our leaders to try and decide what is the bes route to go. It is easy to watch from the sidelines and "armchair quarterback".

I'm glad you have a successful business. Sometimes it takes a long time to make a go of one. No man is an island - as you know, it takes a village to raise a child and the same goes for people starting out.

I'm sorry if I got testy.
