Just letting you know I'll be missing for a while. I'm headed for a total knee replacement the 25th of this month. Would have doen it earlier but I've got 2 more weeks of school. If I don't finish them I'll have to retake them and pay for it myself..not a good thing. I'll be off school almost a month until I can sit at the computer for a long enough period to do my work, but I won't be doing anything extra like forums...I can only sit for a short period of time in the beginning and I'll have to devote that time to school. I'm still working...what a pain. I'm using a walker to get to the buses. Fortunately it's my left knee so I don't have to use it for the throttle or brake. Fellow drivers kid me about getting out of the bus to use the bathroom and having people see me with a walker. It does have to raise some eyebrows I'm sure shocked

Good luck - and will be thinking of you as I help my mother recoup from a hip replacement on the 22nd.

I hope that you will get a great deal of relief from your surgical fix - will you need the other done as well?

It seems no one likes using a walker so I say hold your head up high and know you are doing the right thing for your health!

I know you will recover quickly. A friend had it done about 10 years ago and she made a remarkable recovery.

Wow that is definitely a lot you're going through - but it seems like it'll really be worth it in the long term! We'll be thinking of you!

Susan...I think a hip replacement would be harder than a knee. I'll keep your mom in my prayers for a full recovery

Rosie...from everything I've heard it is painful for the first 2 weeks...it gets better daily after that. Guess that's because the staples come out at the end of week 2. I could be back to work in 8 weeks so recovery must be fast.

Angie...the wife of one of the men I work with had it done and was back to work in 9 weeks. Can't be as devastating as I'm imagining.

Lisa..it seems like a lot to me too, but I stop to think at least there's a fix for my problem. Some people live in a certain degree of pain all their lives with no relief. My friend's son in law just returned from Iraq after he and his group were showered by schrapnel(sp?) from a land mine. The one that triggered it died. No matter what I'm going through he's much worse off.

Granny,
I wish you luck. I had 2 hip replacements and I'm in the mids of a 3rd one, and I am only 30 years old smile I had my hip joint removed 3 months ago and will get my new one at the end of October (hopfully) in the mean time I don't have a hip joint what so ever and moving is somewhat impossible. I am using a walker to transer from a chair to a wheel chair and back to bed smile So I knwo how you feel, I also know the pain and wish you nothing but the best adn the speediest refcovery.

A knee replacement is easier in surgical procedure but is harder to recover from (from what I saw, heard, and experianced), only because the knee joint is more complex then the hip joint. However, in both surgeries you get out of bed and take a few steps the day after, very rewarding! The pain is there but right away you'll notice that the pain you have is different then the one you had prior to the surgery. The pain after the surgery is a normal post surgery pain which goes away after a few days to make room for the physiotherapy pain wink
The best thing about such surgeries is that once you are done with them and go past the first 2-3 weeks (first week is always the hardest), you'll feel like a completely new person, it's AMAZING! you'll be able to do simple things that are so hard now, much easier and pain free smile

I had a major hip infection (7 years after my second hip replacement) and had 4 debridement surgeries before they decided to take my joint out completely, so I am in for a long and somewhat unplesent recovery (it's been 9 months so far), I'm hoping to to get my surgery like I mentioned earlier at the end of October so I too, could go back to walking and life pain free.

Good luck on your surgery and if you have computer accecss and want some support from someone who has been thorugh something similar let me know smile

Susan, same for you if you neeed advice or have questions regarding things and feelings that only those who have gone through a replacement know, let me know smile Good luck to your mom as well smile

Wow that is simply amazing. How can you even "live" without a hip joint?

You have your pelvis which is one solid piece I think, is it? With a front and back part? Then the leg bones fit into that on either side. What part is the hip joint that is missing? The squishy stuff in between the top of the leg bone and the bottom of the pelvis?
