Kakie, I checked the pattern at Bernat and think I can help you. First, let's look at the directions for rows 3 & 4:
[color:#FF6666]
3rd row: Ch 3. 1 dc in next dc. *1 dc in each of next 7 dc. Ch 4. 1 sc in top of Tr2tog 2 rows below, working over ch-7 sp. Ch 4. Rep from * once more. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn.
4th row: Ch 3. 1 dc in next dc. *(1 tr. Ch 5. 1 tr) in next sc - V-st made. 1 dc in each of next 7 dc. Rep from * once more. 1 dc in each of last 2 dc. Turn.

Note in row 3 you have "1 sc in top of Tr2tog 2 rows below." Then you TURN your work and begin row 4.
"Ch 3" -- this counts as your first dc.
"dc in next dc" -- so you now have 2 dc made in row 4.
"(1 tr. Ch 5. 1 tr) in next sc - V-st made" -- Work 1 tr, ch 5, 1 tr in the sc of row 3 -- everything within those parentheses are worked in ONE stitch in the last row. "V-st made" means that you've just made a V-stitch.
If you look at the picture, you'll see the laciness that this V-stitch creates.
Just be sure you make the "1 tr, ch 5, 1 tr" all in the same stitch and it will work for you.
