Great JP ! I too have been changing my tanks around. I got some of that Echo-Complete..(expensive as it is !)..and I have added some to my 5 gallon divided and one of the 1 gallon aquascenes...and also the 2 gallon hex. The plants I put in there are thriving and growing nicely. I put a layer of spagnum peat moss underneath the substrate..don't know what that will do, but I guess I'll find out...lol.

One thing I did notice is that one of the betta I have a consistant problem with irritated and shredding fins...is in the 2 gallon hex with the new "stuff"...havn't had a problem since with his fins. I think it may be due to the fact that the PH is now lower in that tank because of the peat...my PH usually runs 8 and over, but with the peat it's about 7.4-7.6. much better !

Here's a pic of the 2 hex...

I really like the new setup and plan on doing up the 10 gallon divided the same. That will use up the rest of my 20lb bag of Echo-C....dang..I like that stuff but it's so darned costly...I"ll probably get another bag anyway.. <img src="/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
I don't ever want to add up all I've spent in this hobby...I'll get depressed and not enjoy it so much anymore... <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Here's a pic of my newest tank setup...a black and white theme. It's still in the works, not done with it yet. I need more rock decorations and more of the black plants behind the white ones in the back left corner...but I think it's coming along nicely and will share another pic of it when I'm satisfied. <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I have 3 panda cories and a pair of black and white guppies in this tank. I'm hoping the guppies get busy and make me some more..they're gorgeous !

Lol....bettas are REALLY fussy !

It's not a good idea to feed them only FD foods. Regular feedings with some pellet type food with an occasion treat of the bloodworms would be a good diet.

Don't worry if they don't eat for as long as a week or two. Sometimes it takes them that long to get used to the idea of eating what you are offering them...if it's something they are't used to.

Hey...new fish !!

I just picked up some shell dwellers today ! I've been wanting to set up a tank of these for awhile now...well I was bored today...so went out on a hunt and came home with two "Lamprologus Brevis" shell dwellers. A male and a female I believe. Very cute, colorful little cichlid. You can barely see one of them hiding in the shell..the female I think/hope

This doesn't really fit the "community" fish catagory...but we don't have a "Cichlid" journal to write in... wait!...or do we ?? !! I'll have to check...

whoooHooo....picked up 4 more shellies today !

I got 3 of a different species and 1 more female Brevis. The others I got are the lamprologus multifa..something...multis for short. They are alot bolder and don't run and hide in thier shells at every shadow like the brevis do.

Apparently the multis type live in true communities...with one "alpha" male and many lesser males which act as guards. They do not eat thier own young or murder each other like other cichlids are known to do...lol...they spend alot of time redecorating and moving things around..namely, thier shells...and they like alot of them. I will have to gradually build up a respectible amount of shells for them to pick over...lol....those things cost alot ! 3$ each in some places !!

Anyway, here's a few pics of my newbies...

This is the male multi...the females aren't cooperating so I don't have pics of them yet...

OMG - those are SO CUTE! I love them!!!!!

I think we do have a cichlid journal but it might be really really buried. I'd love for you to start a new one, Emg. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have just decided to tell my story about getting addicted to fish <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Last March I have decided that my living room could do with some extra decoration - and seeing little cute bowls with gold fish so often on TV I went and bought a 8ltr (sorry my ability to count in gallons is not so good) bowl with 2 small fancy gold fishes - guess what - nobody in a pet shop mentioned that it might be not a very good idea! I have just figured it out by myself after reading as much about gold fish as I could find online....

So, one bowl with 2 fishes and a plastic plant turned into a bowl + 15ltr plastic tank with air pump, filter, and many more plastic plants.

All've been well till I saw one poor betta on a table in a pet shop in a tiny bowl (about the size of a cognac glass!) which I just had to take home and get a bigger place for.

AND, 2 aquariums turned into 3... and cutting long story short... I am a very proud owner of <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />:
160lts tropical community tank,
20 ltr betta tank,
18ltr snails tank ( no don't laugh it's really snails only tank) and
8ltr bowl with a betta.

All this just to say - I think a fish hobby has to come with a warning of how addictive it is. ... I am just making plans for another betta aquarium :P
