Before I write any article for the Classic Rock section, I take in a few YouTube performances just to get the feel for the subject. sometimes that makes the process take waaaay longer than I'd planned, lol, but I always try to pick out that perfect performance that really typifies the performer or band.
It had been forever since I saw the Monterey Pop performance of Ball and Chain, and I was just blown away in rewatching it. It's the kind of thing that you notice something different in every time. Was there anything that woman couldn't sing?
You can't see that and not be struck by how bad music really is today. Nowadays they just choose someone attractive and teach them how to (barely) sing, or to sort of sing along with a chorus of others. It's so sad to think that the greats like Janis aren't being signed because the music isn't really the focus anymore.
