I personally love talking animals in stories and film. If we didn't have talking animals what would Bambi have been like? There are too many movies to list here about talking animals but we wouldn't have classics like Alice in Wonderland or Charlotte's Web or for that matter, we wouldn't have Dr. Doolittle either.

Kids love talking animals and as long as kids like talking animals, talking animals will sell.

What about the Narnia books, they're full of talking animals! There's The Wind in the Willows too.

And very small children, at least in the UK, are currently being enthralled by the "In the Night Garden" series with Derek Jacobi narrating, which is on DVD. My 16 month old nephew loves it! For starters Iggle-Piggle is a blue teddy bear who nods and shakes his head and makes gestures in response to questions from the narrator. It really is very imaginative and quite entertaining even for the adult!

Human beings are very good at creating drama and freaking out over anything and talking animals in children stories is one of the ways they do it (actually thats the first ive heard of this but im not shocked that this is a thing).
