I watched my 2 year old grandson last night so my kids could celebrate their anniversary out for a childless dinner. I brought my own vegetarian dinner...penne pasta, mushrooms, broccoli, meatless chicken with alfredo sauce. My grandson loved it...all of it. Couldn't believe he ate broccoli, mushrooms and vegetarian chicken protein.

Wooohoooo....you've got a veggie buddy to dine with I bet you prepared it well also. Kids are usually pretty good eaters when you have a good presentation and sauce or dippers.....great job

It made me feel good Sue...his mom is getting better but she's a picky eater. She comes by it honestly though, her parents are both very picky. When my son first married her she ate only....and I mean only....chicken breast, OM all beef hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and spagheti with marina sauce..oh yes and bread...tons of bread. She now eats beef, some sea food, some veggies...she loves salad. Marrying my son was good for her.

When the children were really babies they loved all the baby foods like squash and such. 3 out of 4 will eat just about anything, but there's always one in a crowd right? The last little guy will gag, make faces, power down water w/each bite if faced with any vegetable matter (other than fries!)We've shown the children by example how to eat well balanced meals-but this one is just stuck.
I'm going to have to start "sneaking in" the veggies into foods!

Hahaha...sneak in those veggies Mary! And, you are sooo right, there is always one that will need the extra push with veggies. I found that zucchini breads and such are a great way for kids to eat their veggies too, not a full punch of veggies, but a start. I just posted a green tomato pie recipe that's pretty sweet, that might be a starter for a veggie group too (or a fruit....depending on how you classify tomatoes! ) Another good one is juicing. Jam all those veggies in a juicer with some strawberries....oh yeah!!!

I did get him to drink a veg. V8, until eldest sister told him it was made out carrots and tomato! Now he won't drink one! Doc. says the kid will come around in time, but he's 7 and I feel like these years are his building block years-in other words if he eats well balanced now-he will do this as an adult.

Be easy on the little one who hates veggies. Did you know that taste-buds, from one person to another, interpret flavors differently? Chemicals bind to the taste buds and cause sensations in the brain - some perceive the flavor as good, and others as disgusting.
One strange phenomenon is a fruit known as "miracle fruit." When the pulp is sloughed across the tongue for 30 seconds, it binds to the taste buds, which then interpret acids as sweet. Lemons are reported as tasting like candied fruits, beer like chocolate shakes, and vinegar like sweetened apple juice. If one tiny fruit can do this, you can understand how the body may change flavor in some kids.

I've found that growing vegetables in the garden gets my kids more excited about eating them. They beg for wilted chard, and eat carrot and zucchini sticks in homemade avocado hummus. They love munching garden cucumbers. Pretty much knowing it grew in the yard makes them more excited about it...

Hi Erika, The V8 Fusion is awesome!..... and Carolyn, I was just watching a show on the miracle fruit (berry right?) it was pretty interesting with a room full of volunteers sipping little slugs of vinegar, olive juice and such....thinking it was sweet.
It was interesting for sure....did anyone else see it?

Hi Nicki....doesn't it make such a difference with your own garden and veggies? My kids always loved to grow veggies and flowers too and the reward for cultivating is a wonderful harvest...they're also used to experimenting with foods in the kitchen (they've got culinary parents) so they've always been pretty good about that but I can tell you that they both went through for a small amount of time when they were younger (for a few months) about the things they ate but it was also a time for them both when they started school. They got into their own routines pretty quick though....yay!
Has anyone else noticed that school, pre-school, daycare etc. made a difference in kids food choices for a while?

Glad that you thought my article on Crabby Caribbean sounded like fun. It surely was,I am a huge fan of vegetables. My grandmother had a huge kitchen garden, and we were lucky enough to partake in harvesting and preparing them for consumption. I was impressed with your grandson eating your vegetarian meal, veggies and all. I like your Salmon recipe as well, did you see the Julie Julia Movie as yet? Greetings and good luck to you.

Hi Deborah, I loved the Crabby Caribbean I haven't seen the movie yet but would like to and also do my own review on it. We've been soooo busy lately with doctors and school so I am a bit behind there, I'm hoping soon though. And thanks for stopping by here....I wish you all the best as well!

That is wonderful!! It's good that your grandchild was willing to eat it and discovered how good it was.
I always tell my children, I do not expect them to like everything, but to at least try it and if they don't care for it that is fine. However if they like it, they now have something else to enjoy.

Nicki That is a great idea. I had a blackberry tree in my backyard and when the blackberries were in season, my kids would pick them and I would make pancakes, or fruit salad and add them. They loved it. Unfortunately when our new fence was installed, the tree was removed and I was upset. Vance and I intend on adding a small veggie and herbal garden next year. we did a lot of renovations to our back yard this past season so there was no time to do it. I am looking forward to having freshly grown veggies next season.
